Rare public domain work

Genji Monogatari or The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu can be a public domain work having been written in the 11th century, but it is hard to find for downloading. Yet it does exist on the Net. It is the world's first novel, about the beauty, pain and transitory nature of existence.

In some theoretical sense, or in it's original form that few people can read, the Genji may be in the public domain. But the English translations are surely copyrighted by the translators and so are not, one assumes, in the public domain.
